Healthcare

The Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja serves the area (15 minutes by car). There are health centres in Playa Flamenca and La Zenia, both accepting padrón-registered residents for SIP card registration. Multiple private clinics along the N-332 offer English-speaking GPs and dentists. Pharmacies are found in every commercial centre.

NIE, Residency & Banking

NIE appointments are at the Policía Nacional in Alicante (C/ Eusebio Sempere). Orihuela city hall handles padrón registration for all Orihuela Costa residents — the office at Playa Flamenca town hall annex is more convenient. CaixaBank, Sabadell and Bankinter all have branches at La Zenia Boulevard with multilingual staff. Standard contracts are 11 months plus a 1-month deposit.

Getting Around

No train station — a car is essential. Buses connect to Torrevieja and Alicante, but services are infrequent outside peak times. Alicante airport is 40 minutes via the AP-7. The area is spread across multiple urbanisations, making walking between them impractical.

Social Life

The expat community is one of Spain's largest — predominantly British, Scandinavian and Dutch. Social life centres on La Zenia Boulevard, the Saturday markets, golf clubs (Villamartín, Las Ramblas, Campoamor) and dozens of English-language social groups on Facebook and WhatsApp.

Insider Tip

When renting, check whether the community fees (comunidad) are included — many urbanisations charge €50–100/month for pool and garden maintenance, which some landlords pass on separately.
