Moving to Spain — Your Complete Relocation Guide

Everything you need to know about long-term living on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol

Essential Paperwork

1. NIE Number

~€10 · 1-4 weeks

Required for everything — bank accounts, utilities, rental contracts. Apply at the Policía Nacional or your nearest Spanish consulate before arrival.

2. Empadronamiento

Free

Register at your local town hall (Ayuntamiento). Needed for healthcare, schools, and residency applications. Bring your rental contract, passport, and NIE.

3. SIP Healthcare Card

Register at your local Centro de Salud with your empadronamiento certificate. This gives access to free public healthcare. EU citizens should bring an S1 form or EHIC. Non-EU citizens need private insurance or contributory rights.

4. Bank Account

Open with your NIE and passport. Most banks require proof of address (empadronamiento). Popular expat-friendly banks: CaixaBank, Sabadell, Santander. Many have English-speaking staff in expat areas along the Costa Blanca.

5. Residency

If staying 90+ days, you must apply for residency. EU citizens register for a TIE at the Policía Nacional. Non-EU citizens need a non-lucrative visa (applied for at the Spanish consulate before arrival) or the digital nomad visa if working remotely.

Healthcare in Spain

Ranked 7th in the world by the WHO

EU Citizens

Register with your EHIC or S1 form at the local Centro de Salud. You will receive a SIP card for free access to the public healthcare system.

Non-EU Citizens

Private insurance required (from ~€50/month). Popular providers: Sanitas, Adeslas, and Asisa — all offer English-language support.

Pharmacies

Open late, many staff speak English, and can advise on minor issues without an appointment. Look for the green cross sign.

Emergencies

Call 112(multilingual operators). All major towns have public hospitals within 30 minutes. A&E is free for everyone regardless of insurance status.

Rental Contracts — What to Know

  • Standard terms: 11 months (short-term) or up to 5 years (long-term under the LAU tenancy law).

  • Deposit:Typically 1–2 months' rent, held for the duration and returned after a satisfactory inspection.

  • Utilities:Usually transferred to the tenant's name, or the landlord bills monthly based on consumption.

  • Notice period: Typically 30 days for both parties.

  • Inventory check: Conducted at move-in and move-out. Document the condition of everything.

  • Rental income tax:This is the landlord's responsibility, not the tenant's.

  • Tenant rights:Strong protections under Spanish law — eviction is difficult and tenants have a right to contract renewal.

Staying Connected

Internet, mobile, TV, and postal services

Fibre Internet

Widely available at €30–45/month for 100–600 Mbps. Main providers: Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, and Digi (budget-friendly).

Mobile

Prepaid SIMs from €10/month (Digi, Lycamobile). Contract plans from €15/month with generous data. No NIE needed for prepaid.

TV & Streaming

Spanish free-to-air channels plus all major streaming services. Many expats use a VPN to access home country programming.

Post & Parcels

Correos (national post) for letters; DHL and FedEx for parcels. Consider a PO box (apartado de correos) if your building lacks a letterbox.

What Our Tenants Say

Real feedback from long-term renters

We spent six months in Torrevieja and OceanHome made the whole process seamless — from finding the apartment to setting up utilities. Marco was always available when we needed help.

Peter & Ingrid H.

Munich, Germany

As a digital nomad, I needed reliable WiFi and a quiet workspace. OceanHome found me the perfect long-term apartment in Calpe with fibre broadband and sea views. Highly recommend.

Mikael S.

We retired to Spain and OceanHome helped with everything — the rental contract, NIE paperwork advice, even recommending a local doctor. They genuinely care about their tenants.
