Why Holiday in Calpe?
Calpe is dominated by the dramatic Peñón de Ifach rock, a 332-metre limestone outcrop that towers over two beautiful sandy bays. This striking landmark sets the scene for a holiday that balances beach days, scenic hiking and wonderful seafood — the fish auction at the port is a daily spectacle worth witnessing.
Holiday rentals in Calpe range from modern beachfront apartments overlooking La Fossa to hillside villas with infinity pools and views of the Peñón. The town has a calm, upmarket feel compared with busier resorts, yet still offers a lively old town with tapas bars, boutiques and a weekly market.

Beaches
Playa de La Fossa
A long, golden sandy beach stretching north from the Peñón de Ifach, with spectacular rock views, Blue Flag water quality and a promenade lined with restaurants and ice cream parlours.
Playa del Arenal-Bol
The main town beach south of the Peñón, with fine sand, calm waters and a wide promenade. Very popular in summer but never feels as crowded as larger resorts.
Cala del Morelló
A small rocky cove between the salt flats and the port, excellent for snorkelling. Less touristy, with clear water and a view back towards the Peñón that photographers love.
Dining
Calpe’s fishing port is the place for fresh seafood — watch the daily fish auction (lonja) at 5 pm, then eat the catch at portside restaurants. The Old Town has tapas bars tucked into medieval streets, and the La Fossa promenade offers beachfront dining with views of the Peñón lit up at night.
Activities & Attractions
Peñón de Ifach hike — a steep 1-hour climb up the iconic 332 m limestone rock with breathtaking summit views
Fish auction at the port — the daily lonja is a unique spectacle; arrive by 4:30 pm for the best vantage
Las Salinas salt flats — flamingo-spotting and birdwatching beside the ancient Roman salt pans
Snorkelling at Cala del Racó — rocky sea beds with grouper, octopus and colourful wrasse
Calpe Old Town walk — Moorish arches, the Torreó de la Peça watchtower and the Gothic Iglesia Vieja
Getting Around
Calpe’s centre is compact and walkable between both beaches and the port. The TRAM connects to Benidorm and Altea along the coast. A car is useful for visiting Dénia, Jávea or the Jalón valley wine towns, but not essential for a beach holiday.
Family Tip
La Fossa beach has shallow water and gentle waves, perfect for children. The salt flats with flamingos are a free, open-air nature lesson. Older children will love the Peñón hike — dramatic but manageable with sturdy shoes.
Best Time to Visit
April to October for swimming. The Peñón hike is best in spring or autumn when temperatures are cooler. Summer is hot but sea-breeze tempered. Winter is mild and ideal for walking, birdwatching and quiet restaurant meals.

About Calpe
Calpe (Calp in Valencian) is a charming seaside town on the northern Costa Blanca, dominated by one of Spain’s most recognisable natural landmarks — the Penon de Ifach. This dramatic limestone rock formation rises 332 metres straight out of the Mediterranean, creating a stunning backdrop visible from miles around.
Nestled midway between Alicante and Valencia, Calpe offers a more relaxed and authentic alternative to its larger neighbour Benidorm. The town has excellent sandy beaches on either side of the Penon, a working fishing port that still holds daily fish auctions, and a growing international community.
Calpe is particularly renowned for its seafood. The restaurants lining the Puerto Pesquero serve some of the freshest fish on the Costa Blanca — from rice dishes and whole grilled fish to the local speciality, llandeta de Calpe, a traditional fisherman’s stew.
