Why Holiday in Mijas?

Mijas Pueblo is one of Andalucía's most picturesque white villages, clinging to the Sierra de Mijas with sweeping views down to the coast and across to Africa on clear days. Cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses with cascading bougainvillea and a charming central plaza create a postcard-perfect holiday setting.

Holiday homes here are typically hillside villas and country houses with pools, plus a selection of village apartments with rooftop terraces. While the beach is a 15-minute drive downhill to Mijas Costa, the village compensates with restaurants, artisan shops and a serenity that the coast cannot match.

Beaches

Playa de La Cala de Mijas

15 minutes downhill by car — a sandy Blue Flag beach with a village-like boardwalk, chiringuitos and a relaxed atmosphere. The closest quality beach to Mijas Pueblo.

Playa del Faro (Calaburras)

15 minutes by car — a mixed sand-and-rock beach near the lighthouse, good for snorkelling and a quieter alternative to La Cala.

Dining

Mijas Pueblo is a dining destination in its own right — terrace restaurants along the cliff edge serve Andalusian specialities with views stretching to Africa on clear days. Try salmorejo, rabo de toro (oxtail stew) and local wine. The village also has charming cafés perfect for a long afternoon coffee with mountain views.

Activities & Attractions

Mijas Pueblo mirador — the clifftop viewpoints offer some of the most spectacular coastal panoramas in Andalucía

Donkey taxis — a charming (and famous) way to tour the village streets, particularly fun for children

Mushroom Museum — a quirky one-room museum dedicated to fungi, unique to Mijas

Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña — a chapel carved into the rock face, the village’s spiritual heart

Hiking in the Sierra de Mijas — trails through pine forests and limestone ridges with wildflowers in spring

Getting Around

Mijas Pueblo is tiny and walkable within the village. A car is essential to reach the coast (15 min) and other attractions. Buses connect to Fuengirola, but the uphill return service is infrequent. Taxis are readily available.

Family Tip

Children love the donkey taxis and the miniature museum. The village playground has views over the coast. For a full family day, combine Mijas Pueblo in the morning with La Cala beach in the afternoon — a 15-minute downhill drive.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May) for wildflowers and comfortable hiking weather. Summer is hot but the altitude keeps Mijas Pueblo a few degrees cooler than the coast. The Virgen de la Peña fiesta in September is a spectacular local event.

About Mijas

Mijas Pueblo is one of Andalusia’s most enchanting white villages, clinging to the mountainside at 430 metres above sea level with breathtaking panoramic views stretching across the entire Costa del Sol to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco on clear days.

The village has carefully preserved its traditional Andalusian character — whitewashed houses with terracotta roofs, narrow cobblestone streets draped in bougainvillea, and small plazas where locals still gather over coffee. While tourism is important, Mijas has avoided becoming a theme park, maintaining its authentic village life alongside the artisan shops and restaurants.

Mijas is famous for its miniature bullring (one of the few oval-shaped rings in Spain), its ermita shrine carved into the rock, and its colony of artists and craftspeople whose workshops line the old town streets. The views from the Mirador de la Muralla are among the most photographed on the Costa del Sol.
