Why Holiday in Villajoyosa?

Villajoyosa — La Vila Joiosa — is instantly recognisable for its rainbow of brightly painted fishermen's houses lining the harbour. Behind the colourful facades lies a town steeped in chocolate-making tradition (home to Valor chocolate since 1881), Roman archaeological sites and a relaxed seaside atmosphere far from mass tourism.

Holiday rentals are limited but charming: beachfront apartments overlooking Playa Centro, village houses in the historic quarter, and a selection of villas in the hills between here and Benidorm. It is the ideal base for travellers who want an authentic Spanish experience with easy access to Benidorm's attractions.

Beaches

Playa Centro

The main town beach right below the famous colourful fishermen’s houses. Fine dark sand, calm water and a promenade with cafes — the most photographed spot in town.

Playa del Torres

A smaller cove south of the centre backed by low cliffs. Quiet and natural, with a small chiringuito and good snorkelling off the rocks at either end.

Playa de la Bol Nou

Also called Playa del Paraiso — a tiny turquoise cove with striking white sand, reached by a path from the Torre de San José. Stunning but limited space, so arrive early.

Dining

Villajoyosa’s harbour restaurants serve some of the best-value fish on the coast — the local specialty is a bollitori fish stew. The old town has tapas bars with terrace seating overlooking the colourful houses. Valor chocolate factory has a café serving churros con chocolate that’s worth the visit alone.

Activities & Attractions

Valor Chocolate Museum — free tours of the famous factory with tastings, plus a shop selling every variety

Roman archaeological site at Allon — ruins of Roman baths, a necropolis and the Torre de Sant Josep funerary tower

Colourful houses photography walk — the rainbow harbourfront is one of Spain’s most Instagrammed spots

Scuba diving — dive centres explore the rocky coastline, including a small underwater cave system

Moors and Christians festival (late July) — one of the most spectacular re-enactment fiestas in the Comunitat Valenciana

Getting Around

Villajoyosa is compact and walkable. The TRAM connects to Benidorm (10 min) and Alicante (40 min), making it easy to explore without a car. A car is only needed for reaching inland villages like Orcheta or the Amadorio reservoir.

Family Tip

Children love the Valor Chocolate Museum — free tastings and a chance to see chocolate being made. Playa Centro is safe for swimming, and the TRAM to Benidorm’s theme parks takes just 10 minutes.

Best Time to Visit

May to October for beaches. Late July is extraordinary during the Moors and Christians festival — book accommodation well ahead. Spring and autumn are quiet and perfect for cycling and exploring the Roman ruins.
