Why Holiday in Santa Pola?

Santa Pola is a genuine working fishing town with a large commercial port, daily fish auctions and some of the freshest seafood on the Costa Blanca. Its long sandy beaches — including the vast Gran Playa — are backed by a palm-lined promenade, and the salt flats nearby are a birdwatcher's paradise with regular flamingo sightings.

Holiday rentals tend to be well-priced: comfortable beachfront apartments along Gran Playa, family townhouses near the centre, and a handful of villas in the surrounding urbanisations. Wind and kite-surfing are popular at Playa Lisa, while the Tabarca island ferry provides a wonderful day trip.

Beaches

Gran Playa

A vast stretch of golden sand with a palm-lined promenade, all amenities and shallow, calm water. One of the longest urban beaches on the southern Costa Blanca, never overcrowded.

Playa Lisa

A windsurfer’s and kitesurfer’s paradise on the eastern side, with consistent winds and designated launch zones. Also has a calmer section suitable for swimming.

Playa del Tamarit

A quieter beach near the salt flats with views of Tabarca Island. Less developed, backed by low dunes and popular with birdwatchers who spot flamingos between dips.

Dining

Santa Pola is a working fishing town, so the seafood is exceptional and affordable. The port area has restaurants serving the day’s catch — caldero (fish stew) is the local speciality. The town centre has tapas bars around the castle square, and the daily covered market sells fish so fresh it’s still glistening.

Activities & Attractions

Salt flats and flamingos — the Santa Pola salt pans are one of the best spots in Spain to see flamingos up close

Santa Pola Aquarium — housed in a 16th-century castle, with local marine species and touch pools

Kitesurfing and windsurfing — schools on Playa Lisa offer lessons for all levels

Cape of Santa Pola lighthouse walk — a coastal trail with dramatic cliff views and ancient watchtowers

Getting Around

Santa Pola is flat and walkable — the town centre, port and main beaches are all close together. Buses connect to Alicante and Elche. A car is useful for the salt flats, the cape lighthouse trail and visiting Gran Alacant or Guardamar.

Family Tip

The Tabarca Island day trip is the highlight for families — kids love the boat ride and the snorkelling is safe in the marine reserve. Gran Playa’s shallow gradient means toddlers can splash safely, and the castle aquarium is a rainy-day winner.

Best Time to Visit

April to October for beach days, with July–August hottest. The flamingos are present year-round but most numerous in spring and autumn. Kitesurfing conditions are best in spring with consistent Levante winds. Winter is mild for walking.

About Santa Pola

Santa Pola is a genuine, working fishing port on the Costa Blanca, just 20 minutes from Alicante Airport. The town’s daily fish auction at the Lonja is still the heartbeat of the community, and the seafood restaurants lining the harbour serve catches that were swimming in the Mediterranean just hours earlier.

The town sits between two remarkable natural features: the Santa Pola Salt Lakes nature reserve — home to flamingos year-round — and the Sierra de Santa Pola cliffs with hidden rocky coves offering excellent snorkelling.

Santa Pola’s greatest claim to fame is its ferry connection to Tabarca Island, Spain’s smallest permanently inhabited island. Just 30 minutes by boat, Tabarca is a car-free paradise with crystal-clear waters and a marine reserve.
