Key Takeaways

  • Alicante-Elche airport handles 15M+ passengers annually with 130+ direct routes across Europe.
  • Gran Alacant is just 15 minutes away and offers sea-view apartments from €120,000.
  • Santa Pola (20 min) is a charming fishing town with salt flats, beaches and apartments from €150,000.
  • Guardamar del Segura (25 min) has natural dune beaches and excellent value from €130,000.
  • Torrevieja (40 min) is the largest property market on the southern Costa Blanca, from €115,000.

Why Airport Proximity Matters

If you are buying a holiday home that you will visit frequently — long weekends, half-term breaks, or regular escapes from northern European weather — the drive from the airport to your front door makes a real difference to the experience. Arriving at 11pm on a Friday after a budget flight from London, Stockholm or Düsseldorf, the last thing you want is a 90-minute drive in the dark on unfamiliar roads.

Airport proximity also matters for holiday letting. Guests strongly prefer properties they can reach quickly after landing. “15 minutes from the airport” is a genuine selling point on Airbnb and Booking.com listings. It also makes the property accessible for elderly relatives visiting — a short, simple transfer rather than a long journey.

And for resale value, properties near airports with strong low-cost carrier connections tend to hold value well, because the buyer pool is larger. A flight from Manchester, Oslo or Frankfurt to Alicante costs €30–€100 return with Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air or Norwegian — making the Costa Blanca genuinely accessible as a weekend destination, not just a summer holiday.

Alicante-Elche Airport Overview

Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (ALC) is Spain’s fifth busiest airport, handling over 15 million passengers annually. It serves as the gateway to the entire Costa Blanca, from Benidorm in the north to the Mar Menor in the south. Key facts:

  • 130+ direct routes across Europe, including all major UK, Scandinavian, German, Dutch and Belgian airports
  • Low-cost carriers: Ryanair (largest operator), easyJet, Wizz Air, Norwegian, Eurowings, Transavia, Vueling
  • Year-round flights to London (6+ daily), Manchester, Dublin, Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Brussels
  • Car hire desks in the terminal from €15/day; the AP-7 motorway (toll-free since 2020) connects to all coastal towns
  • The airport is located between Alicante city and Elche, on the N-332 / AP-7 corridor

For buyers from the UK and northern Europe, Alicante airport’s route network is one of the strongest arguments for buying on the Costa Blanca rather than other Spanish coasts. Few other airports offer such comprehensive, year-round connectivity at budget prices.

Towns by Drive Time

Gran Alacant (15 minutes)

The closest coastal residential area to the airport, Gran Alacant is a purpose-built urbanisation perched on cliffs above Carabassí beach. It was developed primarily in the 2000s and consists of apartment complexes, townhouses and a small commercial centre. The beach below (accessible via a clifftop path) is one of the most beautiful and least crowded on the southern Costa Blanca — a long stretch of fine sand backed by dunes.

Gran Alacant suits buyers who want maximum convenience — you can literally be at your front door 15 minutes after leaving the airport terminal. The community is international (large British and Scandinavian presence) but quieter than Torrevieja. Downsides: limited commercial amenities (one supermarket, a few restaurants) and no real town centre. Prices: apartments from €120,000, townhouses from €180,000.

Elche (15 minutes)

Spain’s third largest city in the Valencia region, Elche (Elx in Valenciano) is home to the UNESCO-listed Palmeral — the largest palm grove in Europe, with over 200,000 palm trees. It is an authentically Spanish city with a historic centre, excellent gastronomy, and a vibrant local economy. Elche is 10 km inland, so there is no beach — but the coast is just 15 minutes away.

Property prices in Elche are the lowest on this list because it is an inland city without a tourist premium. Buyers get significantly more space for their money. The trade-off is that it is less appealing for holiday letting (no beach walk) but excellent for permanent residents or long-term rental investors targeting the local workforce. Prices: apartments from €80,000, houses from €150,000.

Santa Pola (20 minutes)

Santa Pola is a working fishing town with a genuine year-round Spanish population, excellent seafood restaurants, and a spectacular natural setting between the salt flats (home to flamingos) and some of the best beaches on the coast. The town has a charming harbour, a castle, and a lively market. It is more authentically Spanish than most Costa Blanca tourist towns.

The property market here targets both Spanish and international buyers. Beachfront apartments in the centre and the Gran Playa area are popular for holiday use, while the residential areas behind the port suit permanent living. Prices: apartments from €150,000, villas rare within town (from €350,000).

Guardamar del Segura (25 minutes)

Guardamar is a hidden gem — a small, attractive town with some of the best natural beaches on the Costa Blanca, backed by extensive pine-covered dunes. The town has a genuine Spanish character with a lively centre, weekly market, and excellent infrastructure for its size. The dune-backed beaches are unique on this coast and the water quality is consistently excellent.

Property prices are notably good value given the quality of the beaches and location. The town is popular with Scandinavian and Dutch buyers. The drive to Alicante airport takes about 25 minutes via the AP-7. For more detail, see our Guardamar guide. Prices: apartments from €130,000, villas from €290,000.

Torrevieja (40 minutes)

Torrevieja is technically outside the 30-minute radius (it is about 40 minutes via the AP-7 motorway), but it is included because it is the largest and most popular property market on the southern Costa Blanca. The drive is straightforward motorway the entire way. The sheer range of property available — from €115,000 apartments to €1M+ villas — and the depth of amenities (hospital, international community, daily markets) make it worth the extra 10–15 minutes.

For a detailed analysis, see our Torrevieja market report. Prices: apartments from €115,000, villas from €175,000.
