Key Takeaways

  • Average 320 days of sunshine per year — one of Europe’s sunniest coasts.
  • Summer highs of 30–35°C; winter lows rarely below 8°C at the coast.
  • Sea temperatures: 14°C in February to 28°C in August.
  • Only 280mm of annual rainfall — about a third of London’s total.

January & February

January and February are the coolest months on the Costa Blanca, but by northern European standards they are remarkably mild. Daytime temperatures average 15–17°C, occasionally reaching 20°C on calm, sunny days. Nights drop to 5–8°C at the coast (colder inland). You can expect 5–6 hours of sunshine per day — short days, but most of them bright and clear. Rainfall is minimal, averaging 2–3 rainy days per month.

The sea is at its coldest — 13–15°C — but a dedicated community of year-round swimmers continues daily. The promenades are popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists throughout winter. Golf courses are in prime condition and significantly less busy than in autumn or spring. This is the cheapest time for holiday rentals, with many properties offering long-stay winter rates from €450 per month.

March & April

Spring arrives early on the Costa Blanca. March sees temperatures climbing to 18–21°C with lengthening days and around 7 hours of sunshine daily. April is a turning point: consistently warm at 20–24°C, very little rain, and the sea beginning to warm past 16°C. Wildflowers carpet the hills, orange and lemon trees are in blossom, and the air carries the scent of rosemary and thyme from the garrigue scrubland.

By late April the beaches start to fill at weekends, though weekdays remain quiet. Outdoor dining becomes comfortable without a jacket. Semana Santa (Easter Week) brings Spanish domestic tourists and some price increases for the holiday fortnight, but nothing like summer peak levels. This is an excellent time for hiking, cycling, and exploring inland villages without the summer heat.

May & June

May is widely considered the single best month to visit the Costa Blanca. Temperatures range from 22°C to 27°C, the sea warms to a swimmable 19–21°C, and you get 9–10 hours of sunshine per day. Beaches are uncrowded on weekdays, rental prices are 30–40% below peak, and the landscape is at its greenest and most fragrant. Humidity is low, making the warmth extremely comfortable.

June marks the start of summer proper. Temperatures hit 26–31°C, the sea reaches 22–24°C, and daylight stretches past 9:30pm. The cultural calendar kicks in with the Hogueras de San Juan celebrations (23 June) — bonfires on the beach, fireworks and parties across every town. Early June offers near-perfect conditions with summer weather but pre-peak prices and crowd levels.

July & August

The hottest and busiest months. July averages 30–34°C with virtually zero rainfall and 11–12 hours of sunshine. August is the peak — average highs of 32–35°C with heatwave spikes to 38–40°C. The sea is at its warmest: 26–28°C, like a warm bath. Humidity rises slightly but the coastal sea breeze keeps the coast more comfortable than inland towns.

Beaches are packed from 11am to 6pm, parking is challenging in town centres, and restaurant reservations are advisable at popular spots. Night markets, outdoor cinema, live music and fiestas run throughout both months. This is the peak pricing period for rentals — expect to pay 50–100% more than shoulder-season rates. If you love heat, buzzing atmosphere and water sports, this is your time.

September & October

September is the Costa Blanca’s hidden gem month. Air temperatures of 27–30°C combine with sea temperatures of 24–26°C — making swimming conditions arguably better than in June. The crowds disappear as Spanish schools reopen, and rental prices drop 20–30% from August levels. Sunshine averages 9 hours per day. Many locals say September is the best month of the entire year.

October brings a gentle cooling to 22–26°C with the sea still at a comfortable 21–23°C. The light takes on a warm, golden quality and the evenings become pleasantly cool. Rainfall increases slightly — October averages 4–5 rainy days — and the first autumn storms (DANA / gota fría) can occur, usually bringing heavy but short-lived downpours. Rental prices reach excellent shoulder-season value.

November & December

November is the rainiest month on the Costa Blanca, though even then Torrevieja averages only 4–6 rainy days. Temperatures drop to 16–20°C — still warm enough for a jacket-free lunch in the sun on most days. The sea cools to 17–19°C. This is when winter long-stay visitors begin arriving, attracted by low rental prices and pleasant weather that feels like an English late spring.

December is crisp, clear and sunny with daytime temperatures of 14–18°C and 5–6 hours of sunshine per day. Christmas and New Year bring a brief spike in visitor numbers and rental prices, but the rest of the month is quiet and affordable. The Three Kings parade on 5 January is a major local celebration with sweets, floats and fireworks in every town.
